When two talented creatives get together, the resulting collaborative work is often impressive. ‘Running in Place’ confirms such a rule once again, showcasing the nuanced artistry and pop flair behind American creatives MaryLiz and Charlie Dane. Bonding over parallel heartbreaks, the two rising icons were able to channel shared feelings, exploring the emotional ‘limbo’ often emerging as a result of a painful romantic experience. Yet, for Maryliz and Dane, that experience also provides fertile ground for inspired songwriting.
That’s exactly how ‘Running in Place’ came to be. From a sonic standpoint, the record moves with contemporary charisma and a certain R&B flavouring, all elements that make for an elegant, hazy and cathartic piece of music. Maryliz and Charlie Dane’s vocals complete the aural picture, giving the track an anthemic, epic quality that’s hard to resist. Originally meeting for one of MaryLiz’s music videos – Dane being a visual artist in her own right – the gifted duo appears to be working very well together.
Delving deeper into her collaboration with Charlie, MaryLiz explains: “Charlie is a mastermind of many talents. It’s an honour to share her vision, her voice, and her creative direction on something so meaningful”.
