There’s a certain excitement and trepidation in releasing an EP you’ve been working on for a long time. Sleepless nights spent in a dim-lit studio, cathartic songwriting moments that feel more like therapy sessions: it’s all coming to fruition, at last. Years of hard work and introspection wrapped in a shiny alternative package, years of overcoming hardship and bitter personal truths now conveyed into three-minute-long musical explorations. A meaningful, career-defining EP that will now make its merry way into the world, seeking to connect with like-minded listeners, perhaps fragile souls alike. That’s how it must all feel for Marcane.
The Manchester-based artist unveils today his latest effort, ‘EPHEMERAL’, an EP that tastes like a potent personal reckoning, the arrival point of a painful, vivid journey. We knew about the record since last year’s ‘Despite The Sharpest Knives’, a track that saw Marcane returning to the music scene after a two-year hiatus. In fact, we even wrote about it, declaring it a “melancholic jewel built on introspective reckoning and purposeful lyrics”. Being diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder pushed Marcane to the extremes, at least in terms of soul-searching reflections and individual growth, a constant self-improvement effort that has exploded into the British artists’ best material to date.
‘EPHEMERAL’ is out today, a collection of six hard-hitting, haunting tracks with a great deal of aural energy in them. Lyricism aside, Marcane’s music is inherently unique and peculiar, a striking blend of leftfield electronica, metalcore-infused distortion and a surprising melancholic cinematic allure. Marcane’s vocals crown the EP with urgency and gritty euphoria, connecting with each listener on a deeper level. Our favourite piece in the record is ‘Hospital Bed’, an emo-leaning, alt-rock ballad built on obscure, beatless textures and a heightened sense of gloom.
