The listening experience behind ‘Hard Shell, Soft Center’ is incredibly elegant and soulful, a blend of nostalgic R&B, jazz melodism and neo-soul allure delivered by the stunning vocals of London-based creatives Maka and Phlow. Originally from Nigeria, the pair struck sonic gold alongside longtime collaborator and producer Teck-Zilla, packing ten tracks full of kinetic energy and emotionally-driven songwriting. Hints of hip-hop surface from time to time, especially when it comes to the syncopated beats and groove-laden basslines.

‘Dive In’ is one of our favourite episodes on the record, a track that feels hypnotic and repetitive, but also incredibly luscious and lively. Maka and Phlow do a great job on the vocal side of things, showcasing their respective tones, incredibly malleable and covering an expanded range. Precise and resonant, the two artists weave a common narrative, one that sees them connecting on a deeper creative level.

From a lyrical standpoint, ‘Hard Shell, Soft Center’ takes up a playful and observant look at evocative theming and cathartic realisation, the perfect match for such a vibrant and brooding record. Delving deeper into the meaningful ethos that propels the single, we are told: “From broken relationships, blossoming love, pain, pleasure, and choosing peace over pandemonium, the ladies take audiences on a thrilling emotional roller coaster filled with twists and turns.”
