Finlay Birch Drops Meaningful, Personal Album ‘Weight Will Unwind’

Isle of Mull-based troubadour Finlay Birch has recently unveiled ‘Weight Will Unwind’, an album containing songs written over the past decade, snapshots of different eras in Birch’s vibrant lifetime.

No, you are not experiencing yet another deja vu. We have, in fact, written about ‘Weight Will Unwind’ previously, celebrating the record for “its aural simplicity… its tenderness, and its quiet confidence”. Today, the eponymous title is adapted into a larger ten-track album, a record that marks a rather crucial milestone for Isle of Mull-based troubadour Finlay Birch. You see, ‘Weight Will Unwind’ contains songs written over the past decade, snapshots of different eras in Birch’s vibrant lifetime.

That’s what makes the album so meaningful and purposeful; it’s the coronation of one’s journey, a cathartic body of work that explores growth, attachment and conflicting emotions, eventually simply describing what it means to live life to the fullest, surrendering to its ups and downs and unexpected joys. The songwriting behind ‘Wight Will Unwind’ is the perfect evidence of that, a perfect companion to the gentle, acoustic-driven folk production that guides the record, here courtesy of acclaimed collaborator Dylan Cooper (Charli XCX, Lil Peep, Anne-Marie, Ashley O).

Delving deeper into the creative ethos that propels the record, Finlay explains: “The album is really about carrying emotional weight for a long time and slowly learning how to let some of it go. Some of these songs have been with me for nearly ten years, so releasing them now feels like closing one chapter and beginning another.”
