It’s always exciting to find a debuting artist you like; it feels like coming across a hidden goldmine, only this time you are allowed to shout it from the rooftops, as opposed to keeping it for yourself. So that’s what we are going to do: meet Losem, a Nashville-based creative who has recently unveiled ‘Hangnail’, a chaotic, powerful cut that punches well above its weight. Behind the song, we find Nashville-based artist Kels Taylor and collaborator Matt Bolton.
From a sonic standpoint, Losem feels rather timely and observant, with its hard-hitting, emo-infused brand of alt-rock and grunge being largely back in fashion. We wonder why the genres have had such a resurgence, and the answer might lie in the need for escapism from a gloomy reality. In ‘Hangnail’, guitar distortions and fuzzy vocals create this dense wall of sound full of grit and melancholic poignancy. It’s something that we wish would never end, quite frankly. Judging by what we heard so far, we have high expectations for the project!
Delving deeper into the meaningful and introspective ethos that propels the record, Losem explains: “‘Hangnail’ is about being your own worst enemy, constantly getting in your own way and actively doing things that hinder you.” It’s a highly relatable message, in fact, one that we relate quite a lot to. Combined with the track’s intense and expansive aural charge, it transforms ‘Hangnail’ into a cathartic, out-of-body experience, the perfect emotional outlet for any overthinker out there.
