Lizzie Esau’s name has been a staple in North East England’s indie and alt-rock scene for quite some time now. Truthfully, her genre-based references are quite fluid, going from roaring guitar motifs to catchy, euphoric vocal hooks. What we know for sure is that the project’s energy is undeniable, with Esau commanding the listener’s attention thanks to unapologetic lyrical flair and strong charisma.
‘Day In The Life’ is the perfect evidence of that. Lizzie’s latest effort, the track is an absolute belter, if there ever was one. Moving through new wave flavoured territories and sharp chillwave nostalgia, the record delivers a wonderfully uplifting drum groove and a stream of evocative, hypnotising harmonies, making for an anthemic, festival-ready listening experience. In fact, we’d love to see the track used as an opener during Esau’s live shows. It would be like an instantly electrifying slap in the face, a cold shower set to wake up even the most apathetic of listeners.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Day In The Life’, the British talent explains: “It’s about living in a constant cycle – moving through the motions of the everyday, stuck in a 2D existence. It’s about feeling like there’s never enough time, and simply existing consumes everything. The weight of routine makes it hard to be a good sister, daughter, friend, partner, artist, etc. Life feels overwhelming, reflected in the repeated question in the choruses, ‘Is that good enough?’”
