A friend of the blog, Dr. Leonardo Barilaro is not your average creator. A visionary pianist, composer, and researcher who bridges the worlds of music and space exploration, Barilaro is globally known as ‘The Space Pianist’, a title that makes even more sense when considering that the talented musician is an aerospace engineer by day. Past achievements include “having sent his compositions to space three times, with music streamed directly from the International Space Station (ISS) to audiences on Earth”, a feature that not many can claim on this very same planet. Barilaro has now become familiar with breaking barriers and boundaries, as his latest work confirms.
‘Zero Gravity, Note One’ stands out as a pioneering body of work, a series of live recordings captured on board a modified Cessna 182 aircraft, during parabolic flights under extreme G-force variations. Boasting three tracks – including a rendition of a Star Wars theme – the EP sees Barilaro teaming up with G0 Flight, a company specialising in parabolic flight research and training, led by Prof. Alessandro Barazzetti. Leonardo performs on a ROLI Piano M.
Delving deeper into the ethos behind ‘Zero gravity, Note One, Barilaro explains: “We compose music and create art through sensations tied to gravity: falling, rising, grounding. This first test begins an exploration into whether weightlessness can inspire an entirely new musical language, a true Space music.”
