Back with a brand-new offering and the third video directed solely by her, Kelsie Kimberlin appears unstoppable. This time around she’s presenting ‘Perfume’, an evocative, meaningful piece delving into heartfelt love and the mystery of attraction, taking a cue from Patrick Süskind’s seminal novel ‘Perfume’, yet giving it an uplifting, positive twist. Exchanging Paris for Kyiv’s elegant cobbles, the Ukrainian-American songstress shoots a compelling music video.
What’s more, once the filming was wrapped up, a Russian drone shot a nearby apartment building killing 15-year-old Mariya Troyanovskaya; Kelsie has dedicated the record to her. It all reflects the dark reality that’s ever-present in Kimberlin’s artistic output, further mirrored in the constant battle between light and darkness – in this case, music, love and the overarching war in Ukraine.
Catchy and contemporary, ‘Perfume’ benefits from high-profile collaborations, the likes of Liam Noland (Adele) – who mixed the record – and Stuart Hawkes (Amy Winehouse) – who mastered it. Speaking about the inspiration behind the piece, Kelsie explains: “I have to admit that in high school, I read the book ‘Perfume’ and watched the accompanying film about a young man in Paris who was intoxicated by the smells of perfume worn by the women in the city. This inspired my song but instead of the dark turn described in the book, my song is uplifting and about how love, like perfume, can be so mysteriously attractive. Perfume is my metaphor for love.”
