Haunting, eerie and incredibly hard-hitting, ‘Last Embrace’ is a joy to listen to. Targeted towards alt/emo and metal aficionados, the track masterfully blends melodic guitars, roaring drums and modern synth matter, making for a record that’s steeped in rock tradition, yet pushing forward, aligning itself to more eclectic offerings (the likes of Bring Me The Horizon, among others). Essex-based project Junction 28 is seen pursuing a similar path, creating tension between screamy vocals, doom-like distortions, and emotional songwriting. It all makes for a single that’s likely to appeal to a wide audience out there.
‘Last Embrace’ is truly hypnotising. We also got lost in its anthemic, cinematic-driven riffing and the potent, towering vocals, here delivered by Craig Keeling. Synth player Kit Sylvester, bassist Dick Phantom, guitarist Gary Digby, and new drummer Tico Richie complete the stunning lineup, signalling a bold new era for the British group. Born out of a collaborative writing process, ‘Last Embrace’ is a monumental effort, one that feels nuanced, fragile and vulnerable, yet also fearless, gloomy and destructive.
This dualism is well mirrored in the song’s lyrical theme, delving into the darkest corner of human consciousness with a fleeting sense of hope. As Junction 28 explain: “The song explores themes of hope, loss, and unity. We’ve always tried to stay optimistic. The world can feel like it’s ending, but we want to talk about holding your people close and finding your family — however that looks — when everything else falls apart.”
What’s more, the record comes with a legendary music video directed by Loki Films, bringing the song’s lyricism to life with dramatic visuals filmed at Grain Battery Tower, an abandoned sea fort only accessible during low tide.
