Part of London’s thriving underground scene, Joseph Bell has long been a best-kept secret, a highly talented individual who could often be found performing in smoky small venues and quirky cafés. Steeped in hazy dream-pop and heartwarming lyricism, the British troubadour appears to have now initiated an upwards trajectory, catching the attention of crucial tastemakers, the likes of BBC Introducing and Voices Radio’s Jodie Bryant, among others.
It all fits a bigger picture; Bell has recently unveiled his debut album, ‘Exploding Stars’, a striking showcase of what he stands for – and what he’s worked for so far. What we can tell you firsthand is that the record feels effortless. Joseph’s ethereal and elegant vocal tone navigates with confidence and purpose over a stream of indie-folk, dreampop-lenient goodness, wrapping listeners into a playfully otherworldly, escapism-driven experience.
Of course, the record also carries a certain variety of themes and influences. Beats and rhythms find their unique character in a blend of soulful and alt-pop references, constantly oscillating between uplifting energy and melancholic respite. Bell is at home in both settings; the stripped-back, cinematic gems, such as the title track ‘Exploding Stars’ and ballad ‘Under Stars’, or more eclectic offerings, such as ‘Better With You’ and ‘Same Old Trainers’.
Delving deeper into the album and its lyricism, Joseph explains: “It’s about all of the choices we make but also the possibilities we leave behind, and the worlds we create within ourselves. The album is a diary of all my internal journeys, which have made me who I am on the outside.”
