Jenica Returns with Intriguing, Peculiar Cut ‘Grey’

A peculiar, intriguing record, ‘Grey’ offers heaps of edgy kinetic energy and functional minimalism, effectively acting as a stylistic bridge between alt-pop and electronica.

Reading through Jenica’s notes about the record, we stumbled upon a quirky, interesting fact. She describes how, trying to identify the song with a colour, she would choose silver. That partly resonates with us, as we realise that’s a perfect comparison. Silver is elegant, restrained, yet valuable and bold. ‘Grey’ is all of those things too, a mixture of icy and minimal-esque alt-pop production drenched in hints of fresh electronica and industrial allure. For instance, we love the spoken words sections, where Jenica’s fast-paced, hypnotic vocals lie upon a kinetic, simple beat.

Between those sections, we then find a more melancholic hook, where synth harmonies enter the picture together with Janica’s nuanced, luscious singing. Yet, we do feel particularly endeared by the spoken words; we feel as though that’s where Janica really comes into her own. As the record shifts in and out of melodies and grooves, it all then comes to fruition into a chaotic, expansive outro, with the London-based songstress even indulging in Spanish lyricism. What more could you wish for?

‘Grey’ is a peculiar, notable effort. It doesn’t quite sound like anyone else, which is a true achievement these days. Furthermore, Janica produces and mixes her own material! Delving deeper into the track, she explains: “It describes a city girl who is chic, bold and carries a lot of personality. It is not aimed at anyone in particular, but rather at every girl because, realistically, every girl is stunning. Hence, why I named the song ‘Grey,’ because of how easy it is for a diamond not to shine through in a crowd full of diamonds.”
