It’s a rather crucial time for Jason Lenyer Buchanan. A period of personal and musical change, one that’s now been put on full display in ‘Gus Gus’. Marking Jason’s latest release, the single feels elegant and brooding, a functional blend between alt-folk acoustic tones and Americana storytelling. That said, there’s a certain old-school pop allure in it, a sign that Buchanan is indeed inspired by a wide pool of influences. We are miles away from predecessor ‘When You Know You Know’, which places more focus on guitars.
Having recently made the move from Cheyenne to Portland, Lenyer Buchanan has chosen ‘Gus Gus’ as the first song recorded in the new location. That’s perhaps what inspired the shift from guitar to piano; as life evolves, art evolves with it. For Jason, this implies a deeper sonic research and a fresh songwriting perspective.
