james king delves into vulnerability in latest gem ‘wishcounting’

There’s something unique in the way james king writes his songs; he does so with a deeply intimate and collected character, positive minimalism with a touch of sacred and catharsis. The keen reader might remember the British troubadour from an article we posted last year, praising ‘deluge’ as “a short yet meaningful nugget of poignancy, incredibly intimate and ethereal”. We stand by our words, as such lyrical imagery seems to be common in king’s elegant, soothing artistry.

‘wishcounting’ sees james return on our pages with another fragment of stillness, an emotional, introspective cut with enhanced production value. Featuring a feathery electronic beat and a wealth of melancholic synth goodness, the song explores what it means to be insecure, looking at how we tend to forget that we can often rely on others to help – and that, after all, insecurity is a shared human experience.

Vulnerability is the keyword here, and we appreciate james king’s attempts to look inward, reflect on our flaws and how we can overcome them. A wonderful sonic addition comes in the form of sampled vocals, taken from ‘Lilla Evening’ by Tuvan/Russian artist Sainkho Namtchylak. Overall, ‘wishcounting’ showcases once again the project’s firm grip on music that’s never obvious, always well developed and researched. That’s also the reason why king enjoys such a large audience.
