James Davis of The project: “I got a guitar when I was six years old and I just went on from there”

James Davis is the brainchild behind the brand new California-based supergroup The project. Known for his previous work as lead guitarist for the band Shameless, James has now assembled a team of seasoned professionals to help bring The project to life.

We’ve been following his musical journey for a while now and thought it was time to get to know him a little better. Grateful that he agreed to an interview, James chats with us about his latest single ‘Hope’, what tune he would “steal” if he could, and what’s in store for The project next. So…Without further ado, please give a big welcome to our friend James Davis of The project.

Welcome aboard James! Thanks so much for taking the time and it’s great to be able to re-introduce you to our audience! Before we get into the nitty-gritty, could you tell us a little bit about your musical journey? When did your love affair with music begin?

It started when I was really young. I got a guitar when I was six years old and I just went on from there.

I instantly fell in love with The project’s debut single ‘best days’ and have been a firm fan ever since. The classic rock tune now has over 1,2 million plays on Spotify! Incredible! How on earth does it feel to know that so many people are listening to and resonating with your music?

It’s pretty exciting. I didn’t know what to expect but people really seem to enjoy what we’re doing.

Your latest single ‘Hope’ is another cracking song that I just can’t get enough of! What do you want the world to know about the track?

What we want people to get from this song is that no matter what their circumstances are, whether it’s relationship issues, money issues, work issues, addiction issues, or whatever it may be – there is always hope.

Who would you put down as some of your biggest musical influences and who would you ultimately credit for helping shape and mould your overall sound?

My biggest musical influences would be Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora’s incredible guitar player. As far as moulding the overall sound for The project that’s got to go to Dennis Hill. I think he’s a musical genius, amazing songwriter, guitar player, producer, etc.

If you were allowed to “steal” one song in the world and claim it as your own, what would it be and why?

‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ by Bon Jovi! It’s an anthem.

Is there a show or concert you attended (or perhaps even played at) that just stands out from the rest? If so, please do tell.

Probably the first concert I went to was Kiss in 79 and the US festival in 83. That just made me realize that that’s what I wanna do.

German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche said, “Without music, life would be a mistake.” What would your life look like without music in it? And what fills your days when you’re not creating?

I couldn’t imagine life without music in it and when I’m not creating I’m running my other businesses in real estate and construction.

Thanks again for taking the time James, it’s been great getting to know you a bit better! What comes next for The project?

We are finishing up the album and will be doing a handful of shows in the States. Next year will be a full tour in the States and the UK.
