Icelandic Heroes múm Gear Up for Comeback Album with ‘Kill the Light’

Weightless and complex, ‘Kill the Light’ is an incredible find. Built on nuanced, measured textures, cathartic and malleable vocals, and a heightened cinematic flair, the track celebrates the comeback of one of the most unique bands out there, Icelandic shapeshifters múm. Closing a twelve-year gap since their last original work (‘Smilewound’), the group is gearing up for their upcoming album, ‘History of Silence’, out September 19th via Morr Music.

From an aural perspective, múm still enjoys blending an elegant palette of electronic and analogue sounds, with ‘Kill the Light’ standing as a perfect example of that. Vocals feel gentle and heartwarming, yet otherworldly and hazy. We are particularly struck by the band’s careful use of silence and pauses, giving the whole record a sacred, mysterious, and collected aura.

About the single and overarching LP, Örvar Smárason explains: “It’s easily the most light-hearted song on the album. Lots of sunshine, 4-track cassette beat, mangled guitar, wonky bass and distorted vocals. It starts with the sound we recorded from a camera flash going off, so it literally begins with a burst of light.”
