Ian Vargo Pays Homage to The Beach Boys in ‘Surfboard’

We always appreciate when behind-the-scenes personnel take up the limelight, showcasing their deep, nuanced artistry. You’d be amazed how many high-profile producers and songwriters could be amazing artists in their own right. That’s exactly what Ian Vargo set out to achieve, releasing a wonderfully delicate and nuanced single inspired by nostalgic and timeless power-pop influences. ‘Surfboard’ is the record in question.

Echoing the likes of Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys, ‘Surfboard’ develops with a truly elegant flair, highlighting a heartwarming piano tone and Vargo’s precise, evocative vocals, quite malleable and playful. Honestly, we are impressed by the simplicity and the precision found in the record. This is very obviously a tribute to The Beach Boys, but it’s crafted so well; there’s a reason why Vargo is such a successful producer.

Boasting credits with the likes of EMI, Capitol and Fueled By Ramen, Ian was compelled to write ‘Surfboard’ thanks to his daughter. As Vargo explains: “My 8-year-old daughter, out of nowhere, asked me to write a song for her called ‘Surfboard’, and I immediately started working on it. As a huge fan of The Beach Boys, this was the perfect chance to pay tribute to them — the beautiful melodies, lush harmonies, and classic instrumentation — while also creating something meaningful for my daughter.”
