We are very familiar with Brighton-based troubadour Ian Roland. We appreciate the simplicity that surrounds the project. At a time when the world is descending into a complex spiral of controversial art and gloomy imagery, it’s refreshing to come across a committed creative penning simple, relatable songs, slices of heartwarming jewels on top of fragrant, tender instrumentals. ‘20 Breaths of Love Per Minute’ is the perfect evidence of that: a romantic, elegant piece steeped in malleable melodies and bright flair.
It’s incredible, isn’t it? Somehow, along the way, we forgot how beautiful unpretentious music sounds like. The power of songwriting is still relevant, as showcased by Roland. The British artist moves with charisma and confidence on a bed of vintage pop and soul material, an ideal match for his wholesome and honest vocal tone. Often performing live in all kinds of lineups and settings, Ian acts from a place of longstanding experience and heightened lyrical wisdom, something that’s fully on display in ‘20 Breaths Of Love Per Minute’.
Delving deeper into the record, Ian Roland playfully explains: “On average, a person takes between 15 and 25 breaths every minute. I have plumped for 20 and written a love song, with trees in mind.” Recorded at Brighton Road Recording Studio, the piece also features Dave Coomber on bass, James Chapman on drums, Mishkin Fitzgerald on piano, keyboards, and backing vocals, plus Jake Skinner on production duties.
