Self-aware and committed to artistic expression, American troubadour Ian Brodsky hides a light trepidation when it comes to sharing his music. “Pitching myself is strange and my confidence wavers, probably because so many people told me I can’t or I shouldn’t” – Brodsky eloquently explains. It’s quite a common feeling, and we’d argue that releasing music is inherently uncomfortable and scary, as it involves unveiling a slice of the artist’s soul to the wider world.
Despite that, Ian fiercely shares his latest album with us. Playfully titled ‘Friendly Neighborhood Something or Other’, the record feels timeless and elegant, packing a wealth of lyrical expertise over heartwarming and theatrical nuggets of nostalgic pop and indie rock. There’s a touch of musical-esque flair in it, something that makes the listening experience even more magical. In a way, ‘Friendly Neighborhood Something or Other’ is an eclectic, expansive album, a sonic journey that deserves to be experienced first-hand, without rush, enjoying Brodsky’s nuanced lyricism.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the piece, Ian explains: “If the first album was a meditation on growing up and how I made it so far, then this album is a celebration of the power that comes from that growth and the people who helped you get there.” Hailing from New York, Brodsky enjoys a true holistic creativity, boasting acting and dancing activities alongside his musical endeavours.
