Heff Vansaint Explores The Struggles of Making Art in ‘Ladder Rungs’

We are quite familiar with Heff Vansaint, having interviewed her not long ago on our pages. At the time, we were quite fond of ‘Jane’, the Scottish talent’s previous single, a passionate, indie-flavoured relationship anthem. Now, she returns with ‘Ladder Rungs’, a more poised and poignant jewel showcasing a wider sonic reference.

Channelling electronica, pop and indie, the record is the perfect framework for Vansaint’s dynamic vocals, drenched in spacious reverb and really taking the listener into the song’s ethos. The chorus brings welcoming rock energy, creating a certain ambivalence between the stripped-down verses and the more beefy and anthemic central section.

Lyrically, Heff Vansaint seeks to recall the challenges and adversities of pursuing a career as an artist in London. Exploring all of the anxieties and anger echoed by such an experience, ‘Ladder Rungs’ wants to also be an ode to the one sticking to their goals. As the London-based newcomer explains: “It’s about trying to get ahead against so many odds. Always swimming upstream and feeling like you’re fighting against the current but still holding onto hope and not losing sight of why you started in the first place. It’s about how I feel about my journey in music really.”

The track is taken from Vansaint’s upcoming debut EP ‘Odes Of Hope For Sad Bois’, out on 8th June.
