We don’t usually cover classical and new age records, yet in this case, we feel as though we can make an exception. You see, what Fiona Joy Hawkins set out to do is not just to release the most wonderfully soothing and evocative instrumental piano album out there. She’s also reaching into everyone’s soul, delivering material that’s relatable and immediate. Of course, there’s a great deal of experience and musicianship in it, but it’ arranged in a way where it doesn’t require any prerequisite to be enjoyed; it simply exists, and connects with anyone willing to listen.
For Hawkins, writing ‘When Shadows Talk’ has been a truly personal affair, an exercise in self-expression and authenticity. Taking time out from the busyness of ordinary life, Fiona isolated herself to fully concentrate on writing the record. “This exile allowed me to explore what lies deep beneath the surface and is often passed over or suppressed, both personally and in the context of broader community discussion”, she eloquently explains.
The result speaks volumes about the incredible artistry enjoyed by the Australian pianist. Featuring twelve introspective, wholesome pieces, ‘When Shadows Talk’ is a slice of unfiltered goodness, even more precious when performed on a rare 97-key Stuart & Sons grand piano. Overall, this is a stunning display of creativity and informed music-making, a brilliant new milestone for Fiona Joy Hawkins.
