There’s always been a deeply rebellious ethos behind Energy Whores. The New York-based project has always looked at society with unapologetic eyes, ready to call out the bull**it when they see it. This time around, they laid their fiery eyes on celebrity and luxury culture, something that’s been quite prominent in the contemporary landscape, often pushed by over-polished social media imagery and fake storytelling. Well, the Carrie Schoenfeld-led group has something to say about it.
‘Pretty Sparkly Things’ tackles all of the above: a fast-paced, electrifying and partly playful effort, the record wraps hard-hitting and no-holds-barred lyricism into a seemingly brighter and bubblegum-esque instrumental contours. Yet, under the surface, this is a meaningful and political record, contrasting opulence and abundance with poverty and deep inequality. That’s classic Energy Whores: they are a force for good, an artistic entity striving to inspire change.
As Schoenfield eloquently explains: “This song is about how society dangles unattainable dreams in front of us while so many people are struggling just to survive. It’s satire, but it’s also deadly serious because this obsession with luxury and status is what keeps the machine grinding us down.” ‘Pretty Sparkly Things’ is taken from Energy Whores’ upcoming album, ‘Arsenal of Democracy’.
