Embracing J. Ludvig III’s Genre-Bending Artistry in ‘Depression Core’

Defining J. Ludvig III as a drummer feels rather limited. A committed creative with a clear artistic vision, the young Danish drummer is also a talented singer and producer, not to mention an in-demand session player with an illustrious list of credits. Yet, we feel as though his solo project is the place where we can really understand the human behind the moniker. You see, J. Ludvig III stands for boundary-pushing, fringe artistry, a union of electronica, jazz-flavoured drums and emotive vocals as seen in ‘Depression Core’.

Out now via New York-based imprint b4, ‘Depression Core’ sees J. Ludvig III embracing a rather melancholic and impassioned look at depression, here conceived as a personified saboteur that stops us from breaking the negativity cycle. Such a meaningful and striking lyrical outlook is expressed through haunting, processed vocals (reminiscent of a young James Blake), daring and aleatory drums, and a stream of nuanced, gloomy textures.

Delving deeper into the song, the Danish hero explains: “‘Depression Core’ is the dust that’s been sitting in the corner for too long. It’s finding an imaginary friend that tries to convince you isolation is where you belong”.
