Folks might remember Elise Trouw as an internet sensation, a viral loop-enthusiast, multi-instrumentalist, and visual artist hypnotising audiences worldwide. Boasting the highest form of musicianship, Elise is the kind of artist that particularly resonates with fellow musicians and music nerds, although it’s fair to say that her reach has now flooded popular culture as well. Anyway, take everything you know about the American artist and throw it out of the window, as Trouw embarks on the next phase of her burgeoning career.
Having completed the instrumental game, Elise Trouw now takes an introspective approach to songwriting, penning material and lyrics with a high degree of cathartic and personal relevance. ‘All You Need Is Lust’ is the first piece of the puzzle. In it, we can observe the project’s part playful and part reflective lyricism, with Trouw assuming the fictional persona of Elon Lust, “a fictional twenty-something male alter ego who embodies a cocktail of entitlement, objectification, and weaponised likability”.
Steeped in an uplifting and eclectic pop livery, ‘All You Need Is Lust’ flourishes thanks to Elise’s malleable, elegant vocals, here unfurling a heartfelt theme made up of things that men have said to her, or to any woman out there. The focus is on authenticity and independence, as Trouw explains: “I didn’t realise until later how much I felt like I had to be palatable. I wanted to be seen as likeable. As someone who could play well and sing well and look good doing it, even if that meant not being my full self.”
