It’s been a while since we heard from Canadian creative Elina Filice. Since her 2023 release ‘Wedding Season’, to be exact. Of course, that doesn’t mean that Filice withdrew from music practice: busy developing her startup DropRocket and writing heartfelt, purposeful new material, the Toronto-based songstress was merely laying the groundwork for a triumphant return. That moment is now: ‘These Days’ marks Filice’s latest single, a nugget of honesty and authenticity packed with heightened introspection and real-life experience.
Bathing in the project’s usual blend of guitar-coded indie allure and pop-leaning melodies, ‘These Days’ touches upon a relatable theme in a rather nostalgic, hopeful manner. Inspired by her own dealings with a long-distance relationship, Elina Filice explores the trusting commitment required to fully believe that such a romantic endeavour is possible. It’s both an introspective, evocative cut and a desire for a brighter future.
Delving deeper into the meaningful ethos behind ‘These Days’, Filice explains: “In a long-distance relationship, the future is all you have. So the song is about the necessity of believing the future will be better. The present is filled with loneliness and pain. You grasp on to every small moment and hold it close to you to get through the times apart. There’s a constant feeling of running out of time. You really have to believe that at some point, you’ll have all the time in the world.”
