It’s been a while since we received new music from ELDERLY WHITE MAN. An international duo based in Portugal, the pair is cryptically self-described as “an American person and a British person”, information that makes a lot of sense when compared to their musical output. While the smooth Portuguese weather certainly adds to their creativity, the pair is also very observant of all that’s happening in politics and in society at a global level. So much so that they have written deeply dystopic and haunting material – material that might seem far-fetched and distant, but that’s actually closer to the present day than we might think.
‘The Empire Fell Down’ is ELDERLY WHITE MAN’s upcoming album, a fictional depiction of a large Western democracy having succumbed to dictatorship. ‘SOMEDAY’ is the first single extracted from the LP, and a striking showcase of what’s on offer. Steeped in nostalgic synth-pop and new wave flavourings, the single transports the project into more lyrically-driven territories, breaking with their earlier disco-infused efforts. ‘SOMEDAY’ feels melancholic yet hopeful, oscillating between anthemic charge and evocative flair.
Delving deeper into the lyrical premise behind ‘The Empire Fell Down’, ELDERLY WHITE MAN explain: “The album is a sophisticated and timely commentary on the fragile nature of democracy in a time when the global order of the late 20th and early 21st Century is collapsing.” It all feels too real, but let’s find out together…
