Last time we wrote about Los Angeles teen singer-songwriter Edie Yvonne, we were impressed by ‘Look Me In The Eye’, a piece we triumphantly described as “transitioning from bubbly pop music to a more mature, deeper and melancholic brand of indie goodness”. Since then, Yvonne has returned with ‘Nightmare’ late last year, and she’s now following up with her latest effort ‘Act of Love’. As is always the case for the project, the song is wrapped in meaningful and evocative songwriting, here treated to a stripped-back, acoustic arrangement.
In fact, ‘Act of Love’ represents a bit of a step up in terms of production quality and overall melodism. Now seventeen, Yvonne appears to be embracing a fiercer, more authentic version of her lyrical self, something that fully comes through in the brooding allure that permeates the new single. The laidback, beatless production builds into an elegant and poignant cinematic outro, the perfect match for Edie’s luscious vocals.
Taken from the American songstress’s forthcoming EP ‘Look Me In The Eye’, ‘Act of Love’ unfolds as an introspective and observant anthem on infatuation and unmatched expectations. As Yvonne explains: “It’s about letting fear and projection get in the way of connection and how hurt becomes cyclical if it’s not dealt with.” The track’s relatable nature is even more relevant, considering that everything is seen through teenage euphoria and coming-of-age awareness.
