It’s the record that sees him back after a two-year hiatus, a public absence that no doubt saw the British musician still writing behind the scenes. Particularly inspired by 90s gothic noir cinema and the French romantic period, Davies has returned with a brooding, cinematic sound, one that’s steeped in guitar-coded energy and anthemic allure. The result is a piece that feels nostalgic and striking, but that also somehow fits the dystopian, dark nature of our modern times.
Davies is adamant about the cultural territory he belongs to, describing his passion for early ‘90s alternative rock and gloomy, goth-influenced elements. In that sense, ‘La Revanche’ reminds us of a grittier, heavier version of The Cure, especially when it comes to Drew’s malleable and resonant vocals. That said, the reference pool is then expanded to more wholesome rock shores, especially when it comes to the copious guitar solos featured in the single.
Delving deeper into the meaningful ethos that propels the record, Davies explains: With ‘La Revanche’ I went deep down the rabbit hole of dark, pseudo-gothic rock. Probably fitting given the song’s themes are ones of emancipation and revenge. I found my love of 90’s alternative rock soundtracks coming out in the orchestration; there are a few nods to The Crow, 12 Monkeys and even Elfman’s Batman in there. It’s the first single I’ve released with my full live band; it brought a new level of energy and freshness to the work.”
