The keen reader might remember Iowa-based outfit Divergent from a feature we published earlier this year, praising ‘Rev It Up’ as “offering a world-class rock sound that’s bound to carry them far in the industry”. We stand by our words: now embarking on a potent new era, the American group seems to have found a new lease of life, embracing eclecticism and aural nostalgia with unapologetic character. ‘I Really Want To Love You (So Bad)’ is the perfect evidence of that.
Compared to its predecessors, the new record takes up a mellower, more evocative livery. Indulging in a luscious and triumphant rock ballad that still carries tons of energy and guitar-coded allure, but that also introduces Divergent’s elegant vocals and sweet melodies. James Richards (guitar, keys, vocals), Mike McAlister (bass, vocals), and James’ brother Paul Richards (drums, vocals) have done a stellar job once again.
Delving deeper into the creative inspiration that hides behind the accompanying video, Divergent explains: “Brought to life in collaboration with HIP Video Production, its abstract, subdued aesthetic mirrors the track’s sense of total immersion, of drifting away in a current that can’t be stopped. Shimmers of light catch the eye at every turn, floating and flickering against the backdrop of the narrator’s heartfelt, at times heavy, confessions.” It’s a great watch, one that perfectly fits the record’s nuanced and moody vibe.
