Discover the Wholesome and Retro-Inspired RnB Outfit The Art Crimes Band

In a world of seemingly standardised electronic productions, we still manage to find modern heroes with a vintage heart, championing an organic and wholesome real-instruments aesthetic. Take for instance Cork residents The Art Crimes Band. Boasting a charming retro-flavouring in their music, they seek to recreate the sound of the so-called ‘golden era’ of the 70s and 80s, when studio musicians were the main characters in a rich music industry.

‘In the Dark of the Evening’ is one of the group’s recent singles, a groovy RnB number with emphasis on female soulful vocals and sapient musicianship. Over a bed of tight drums, Fender Rhodes, funky guitars and understated basslines, The Art Crimes Band lay endless vocal harmonies and an evocative, luscious and wonderful lead tone, courtesy of talented newcomer Grace McMahon. Other members include Gary Baus (Alto Saxophone), Stephen Kirby (Guitars), Niall Dennehy (Drums & Percussion), Tim O’Leary (Bass) and new entry Katie O’Donnell (Piano & Keyboards).

Written and recorded during the pandemic, ‘In the Dark of the Evening’ is an exploration of mental health and the effects of isolation, with its lyrics offering a message of hope, love, and friendship. Recalling the likes of Quincy Jones, Toto, and Steely Dan, the record was entirely made at Flashpoint CC Studios in Cork city, with the help of legendary mastering engineer Miles Showell.
