Discover Ratfink! and Their Wholesome, Honest Lyricism

Despite ‘Gay Song’ boasting a bold and unapologetic title, it’s also rather personal and vulnerable, a slice of honesty and intimate experience drenched in a simple, yet effective, pop livery. The ethos behind the record is truly DIY, with friends and creatives Liv and Ralph making music in their house share in Brunswick, Melbourne. Going by the name Ratfink!, the talented pair navigates alt-pop, folk and indie influences with a curious mind, eventually selecting a minimal aural panorama that fully supports their wholesome lyricism.

‘Gay Song’ might be a personal piece, but it also narrates an experience that’s perhaps quite common around the world. Have you ever tried to come out as gay in a conservative town/area? Tough luck. We have to say, though, it always makes for great art, so… swings and roundabouts? On a serious note, we appreciate the courage to open up; the experience sung in ‘Gay Song’ was obviously painful and problematic at times, and we take solace in knowing that we have at least reached a point where people feel safe sharing such personal storytelling to the wider world.

Indeed, we are confident many people will resonate with the record and with Ratfink!’s authentic, approachable style. As they explain: “‘Gay Song’ is the most vulnerable Ratfink! single yet, a coming out story about growing up gay in a conservative part of the world.”
