There’s often wisdom to be found in a life dedicated to the music craft. Marshall Oakman knows that well, having spent most of his time on Earth penning wholesome, relatable songs with a highly nostalgic twist. Oscillating between power-pop euphoria, blues grittiness and rock’n’roll energy, the New York-based troubadour uncovers a sonic universe that’s highly influenced by some of the heroes of his youth, such as Beatles-esque melodies and playful lyricism. ‘At the Boling Point’ is the perfect evidence of that, a blues-leaning piece with a great deal of instrumental prowess and old-school allure. ]
Leaving behind any semblance of modernity, ‘At the Boling Point’ delivers one of the fiercest pieces we have heard recently. A relentless gallop reveals the full-band intensity that Oakman has to offer, supported by fellow New Yorkers Kasim Sultan (Joan Jett) on bass, Liberty Devitto (Billy Joel Band) on drums, and Paul Pesco (Madonna) on guitar. The same lineup can be found in other singles by Marshall, such as ‘When Life’s Cold’.
Overall, ‘At the Boiling Point’ might not appeal to everyone due to its highly nostalgic ethos. Yet, anyone brave enough to take it on will be rewarded by a limitless uplifting charge and a wonderfully retro sensation.
