Discover Gillian Rae Perry’s Dynamic Lyricism In New Album ‘Gilligil’

For some, records are an exercise in style; for others, they are a way to express themselves deeply, to manifest a particular state of mind, a unique emotion, or to inspire others. For Gillian Rae Perry, music provided the perfect tool to recount her personal struggle with mental illness, aiming to comfort and help others in the process. Her latest effort takes the shape of ‘Gilligil’, an acoustic, 10-track album that greatly showcases both her refined songwriting and evocative vocals.

With a background in composition, orchestras and film music, it is no wonder why Rae Perry’s music takes on such gentle, poignant qualities. Starting with opener ‘A Day’, we are introduced to an intimate collection of songs. There’s immediacy: pure lyricism, floating over a light sonic background made up of piano, strings and various plucks. Interesting it is the way Gillian plays with harmonies and backing vocals, sometimes dressing them in long reverbs and giving them a rather ethereal quality. Be it the haunting vibes of ‘Like This’ or the more bubbly, ironic mood of ‘Therapist’, the record dynamically jumps through a series of different moods, helping to keep the listeners focused.

Overall, a surprising effort from Rae Perry, who showcases herself not only as a gifted composer but also as a talented songwriter and vocalist.
