Presenting himself as a “lone-wolf singer-songwriter”, British troubadour Beyond Signal sets himself up as a sort of antihero to the music industry. Amidst a general push for conformity and general trends, he’s the one boldly looking the other way, finding greatness in peculiarity and authenticity. I am a big fan of such a philosophy, as I have always been a firm believer that artists should strive for maximum originality early in their careers, then find common ground as their audience grows.
Of course, for the Sheffield-based aural explorer, this strategy is not a marketing choice; it is more of an overall identity, a deep-rooted state of mind, one that we suspect has a lot to do with his self-proclaimed neurodivergence. ‘The Answers’ is the perfect evidence of that. Originally released in 2025, the track embraces the moodiest darkwave alive, turning an open-ended reflection about the human mind and its relationship to the universe into a melancholic Sovietwave banger.
Delving deeper into the quirky and highly personal ethos that propels the record, Beyond Signal explains: “This song is highly ambiguous and has many potential meanings. For me, it’s about the post-truth nature of our current existence, and looking for answers in the chaos. Could the answers we seek be you and I? My first entirely self-produced song. Very proud.” As he should be; ‘The Answers’ is a delightfully peculiar and brooding gem.
