Dirty Dev Marks his Return with the Atmospheric ‘Frida and Leon’

‘Frida and Leon’ sees Edmonton-based experimental hip-hop artist Dirty Dev showcase a significant deviation from his previous work, and it’s a sound that I can seriously get behind! Leaning into a more melodic, atmospheric, and thoughtful sound, Dev has loosely based his latest tune on the tumultuous relationship between Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky. He’s quick to point out, however, that “while the words are about that, they are also about my own personal experiences”.

Genre-wise, it’s a track that’s tough to pin down. Working alongside frequent collaborator PHILY, the pair have constructed a dreamy, intense, and hazy little number that I refuse to place in a box. It sucks you in straight away with lush textures and Dev’s hypnotising, ethereal vocals. I really think the musician is onto something sonically unique and noteworthy with this new sound of his!

‘Frida and Leon’ is the first of many singles that Dirty Dev plans to release throughout this year. It’s going to be interesting to see what sonic direction he chooses to go in. All I know for sure is that this tune has truly resonated with me, and I can’t wait to hear what he offers up next!
