Taking an eclectic, flamboyant approach to modern electronica, Miami-based producer Di Stefano has recently unveiled his latest effort, a Japanese-inspired piece that’s part leftfield and part world music. Aptly titled ‘Kotokashi’, the record moves with cathartic energy and kaleidoscopic production, packing a wealth of authentic Japanese instrumentation upon a rather minimalistic script. Described by Di Stefano as a ‘cultural fusion experiment’, the record is as unique and daring as they come.
Written and produced by Di Stefano himself with the help of audio engineer Elliot, ‘Kotokashi’ also benefits from actual Japanese vocal samples, giving the track an incredibly elegant flair. Part of the American producer’s love for soundscapes, the track belongs to a series of explorative, multi-cultural recordings, where Di Stefano enjoys embracing different cultures and diverse aural references.
Delving deeper into the inspiration behind ‘Kotokashi’, Di Stefano explains: “It was shaped by both traditional and modern sources. I drew heavy inspiration from traditional Edo-period Japanese music; equally, I was inspired by ancient Japanese instruments like the koto and taiko. Rather than imitate, I aimed to reinterpret.”
