Once again, I found a record I can lose myself in. Honestly, can you blame me? Look at the state of our reality. I’d much rather be lulled into a heavenly meditative state by Devin Shaffer’s vocals than doomscroll a TikTok feed full of ragebait. Hence, I dive fearlessly into ‘Patience’, the American songstress’s debut album. In it, Shaffer uncovers a blissful, cathartic and partly melancholic aural universe, a hypnotic place steeped in meaningful, mystical lyricism and tender folk-leaning arrangements.
One thing I’ll praise ‘Patience’ for is its heightened ‘grounding’ effect. Thanks to Devin’s luscious, evocative vocal tone and her wondrous melodies, the album effectively slows down time, gifting listeners a moment of well-deserved stillness and heartfelt introspection. Call it mindfulness, call it deep observation – the point is, this record is a healing elixir for the racing mind, a slice of gentle understanding in a chaotic, rowdy world.
For that, I would like to thank Shaffer. The music industry is an ungrateful, solitary place nowadays, but every time I come across music so beautiful, I am reminded of why art is so needed. It makes the world bearable. For anyone in New York City, Devin Shaffer is playing a show on December 5th, and if you are smart, you’ll be there.
