The keen reader might remember Darkroom Data from a feature we published in early ‘2025, praising ‘First Echo’ as a “whispered conversation between distant landscapes”. It was pretty evident how the talented indie duo champions the unconventional, bathing in brooding synth-pop with a great deal of nostalgic allure. Their releases have been rather sparse in the last few years, with the 2021 stand-out single ‘Fall With You’ being followed by the aforementioned ‘First Echo’ in 25.
Yet, the wait is often part of what makes a project so worth it. Darkroom Data are the perfect evidence of that, now unveiling a brand new offering, ‘90s Double Vision’, a piece that quietly returns to the group’s kinetic, retro territories, doing so with unmatched charisma and hypnotic charge. Set to be included on the soundtrack of a 2027 short film by Irish Director Oonagh Quinn, ‘90s Double Vision’ appears to be evoking a past era that continuously transcends into our collective experiences.
In fact, something that we appreciate about Irish vocalist Gillian NoVa and Brazilian composer Márcio Paz – the humans behind the project – is their ability to draw a great deal of influences from past decades, yet wrap their records in a contemporary, alternative sheen. ‘90s Double Vision’ confirms it all, thanks to its synth-laden production and lo-fi aura. The single also benefits from the final help of award-winning engineer Nicolas Essig, whose credits include Lana Del Rey, Daft Punk and Madonna.
