It took us a while to fully delve into ‘couple(t)s’. Packed with heartwarming and charming folk-rock goodness, the album is also rather eclectic, borrowing from blues and country here and there. Focusing on simple and relatable songwriting, the record delivers Couldn’t Be Happiers’ positive storytelling, all drenched in the gloomy reality around us, yet looking at it with hopeful eyes and the willingness to do better.
Oscillating between love and protest songs, it’s clear that Jodi Hildebran Lee (drums, vocals, harmonica) and Jordan Crosby Lee’s (guitar, vocals) move with purpose, drawing from personal experience, but also from observing the chaotic nature of our world. A real-life couple, Couldn’t Be Happiers recorded the album with Doug Davis of Flytrap Music Production, keeping it simple but never shying away from haunting acoustic matter and poignant harmonies.
Featuring twelve episodes, ‘couple(t)s’ deserves to be enjoyed gradually, in peace, absorbing all the lyrical wealth delivered by the American talents. Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, they explain: “The couplet is simple and powerful, much like folk music. But it’s also an apt metaphor for our relationship. A couplet is a pair of rhyming lines with the same meter. Each line is made up of different words, but they always come together at the end. Likewise, Jordan and I are completely different people, but we work in concert for the same goal of creating unique, but relatable, folk music.”
