Some might define Coor Brow-Obles’ gloomy, melancholic aesthetic as nostalgic, yet we’d better call it fascinating, evocative even. You see, embracing a strong new wave and post-punk outlook, the talented songwriter and musician takes a cue from the great British tradition in such genres, echoing the likes of Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, and The Cure, among others. What results is a mixture of decadence and sacred reverence, a sound that’s hard-hitting, yet introspective and hypnotic. ‘In Moonlight’ is the strongest evidence of that.
Marking Coor Brow-Obles’ latest effort, ‘In Moonlight’ builds an aural universe with a heightened gothic allure, favouring shimmering guitars, fierce distortions and a slick, uplifting charge, one that maintains an intense emotional flair – exactly as one would expect from such a lush project. The accompanying music video seeks to translate such a potent sonic aura into visual language, doing so rather successfully. Eerie footage of people walking in a deserted park, and solitary, kaleidoscopic shots of Coor Brow-Obles make for a compelling watch.
Hear us out: ‘In Moonlight’ might not reinvent the wheel per sé – as its influences are very clear – yet it reintroduces gloomy and partly dreamy new wave to the mainstream realm, in a move that perhaps relates to the chaotic and dark situation in our world. Some might see it as a cathartic act, a way to cope with a difficult reality. Whichever way you look at it, there’s no doubt that Coor Brow-Obles is first and foremost a talented musician, and as such, he deserves your attention.
