When listening to Cole Blouin, there’s no telling where you might end up. Perhaps it’s noisy, abstract soundscapes steeped in fuzzy distortions and spacious echoes. Or, maybe it’s micro-tonal minimalism, all framed into a neo-classical livery that’s elegant and bold. Hailing from New York City, Blouin is known to most as a sonic artist, a producer, and a songwriter. In other words, a creative entity that approaches the musical medium from a vast multitude of angles, simply championing personal expression, wherever that might take him.
This time around, Cole ends up in rather nocturne and ambient-driven territories, with ‘First Descent (Glimpse)’ unfurling an eclectic, yet channelling aural experience. There’s a variety of textures and compositional phrasing in it, from ethereal and haunting textures, passing through saturated tones and eerie noises. In a way, the record serves as a timely summary of where Blouin is headed, sonically speaking, offering a cohesive look at what the project stands for.
‘First Descent (Glimpse)’ is taken from the overarching EP ‘Preludes’, out on November 14th. It’s also part of an even larger endeavour, a ten-year-long effort called ‘Afterform’. Its first few hours will be unveiled in 2026, across three different albums. Overall, this is not music for everyone; we are aware of that. Yet, if one is bold enough to dive into it, the reward is immense.
