The keen reader might remember American power-pop explorer Cody Piper. Featuring ‘Run Home’ just a few weeks ago, we celebrated the single as driving “an overall feeling of whimsy, evoking a keen sense of grandeur”. We stand by our statement, and it especially rings true today, as we discover Piper’s newly-released album, ‘Revealed’. What follows is a stream of nostalgic euphoria and theatrical flair, a deep dive into the history of early pop-rock. Think ELO, The Beatles, and Queen, among others. That’s perhaps what made the album sound so heartwarming and familiar, like meeting a close friend after a long time apart.
Next to that vintage power-pop character, we also find a keen contemporary allure, with occasional forays into psychedelia and dream-pop. ‘Hibernating’ is one of our favourite episodes on the album. We are drawn to melancholic material, and naturally, such an introspective and evocative effort sparks our attention. It’s here that we can catch a variation on Piper’s pop-rock theme. Soothing, nuanced vocals layered against tender acoustic guitars and eerie textures: what more could you wish for?
Delving deeper into the record, Cody explains: “The loose theme of the album is songs that are about important themes throughout my life, and feelings that I’ve always internalised since I’m not one to really show my feelings to anyone. Hence the title of the album, ‘Revealed’”.
