A poignant, meaningful piece, ‘To Ignore Evil is to Become an Accomplice to It’ seeks to shine a light on the inhumane immigration policies of the current United States administration. Hoping to inspire fellow listeners in taking a stand against what’s perceived as wrong and unfair, American composer and pianist Carlos Barba expresses himself in the only way he knows: through a wonderfully crafted and nuanced piano-powered piece, a liminal and evocative gem that’s short yet hard-hitting.
Hailing from the borderland of El Paso (which might make Barba particularly sensitive to the immigration issue), Carlos reverses all of his internal frustration and anger on his musical instrument. Despite such an angsty premise, the talented creative still maintains a softly spoken aural tone, never shouting; instead, unveiling a slow-moving, cathartic episode that’s way more effective in capturing people’s attention and in appealing to their inner kindness.
Part of a wider album dedicated to the current U.S. political turmoil, ‘To Ignore Evil is to Become an Accomplice to It’ is a wonderfully striking effort. Speaking about his work, Barba explains: “My music reflects the current times, as I stand up to tyranny and injustice. This album will reflect the moral and humane side of history when we look back at all the atrocities that are being committed.”
