‘Hatter’s Mad Emporium’ sounds unlike anything else we have heard before. It occupies its own unique, personal space, a slice of haunting energy laced with unexpected playful tones and smooth melodies. It represents a striking contrast between light and darkness, an aural chiaroscuro that evokes an otherworldly reality, for some reason. Perhaps it’s due to the piece’s dystopian nature, a character that’s manifested by its author, Bog Witch herself.
Described by the American songstress as ‘neo-Victorian’, ‘Hatter’s Mad Emporium’ takes listeners into a fictional Wonderland-themed universe, sparking quirky and surrealist storytelling based upon such ‘Emporium’. It’s a literary-influenced effort, one that showcases the imaginative and inventive flair behind the project. Hailing from Georgia, the American creative pens a real belter, one that’s drenched in wholesome and flirtatious instrumental tones.
Delving deeper into ‘Hatter’s Mad Emporium’, Bog Witch explains: “I wanted to explore the darker corners of Lewis Carroll’s world. As a kid, I was a bit uncomfortable with Wonderland. Wonderland always seemed on the edge of something to me. It tilted toward the ‘not good’. Alice is tempted (or goaded) into eating things that make her uncomfortable. But she survives and goes on to endure quite a few other trippy things before she wakes from her dream.” The entire record is written and produced by Bog Witch, known by day as aka Wendy DuMond.
