Azuka Moweta Unveils Latest Album ‘Kenechukwu’

Azuka Moweta unveils his latest work, ‘Kenechukwu’, a hybrid of Ekobe and Igbo Highlife, turning gratitude into rhythms and reverence into dance.

As we drive into ‘Kenechukwu’, we can’t help but feel mesmerised (as we do) by the vibrant eclecticism and global allure carried by the album. Penned by Nigerian creative and musician Azuka Moweta, the record embarks on a tasteful and uplifting dive through Ekobe and Igbo Highlife, a striking picture of African global music as an ever-evolving, modulating landscape. As one would expect, there’s a great deal of kinetic energy in the record, yet not the kind that would necessarily invite trivial dancing. It’s more of a gentle, hypnotic bounce, with Moweta’s charming vocals guiding listeners towards aural euphoria.

Described as poured straight from the soul of Asaba; an album that turns gratitude into rhythm and reverence into dance”, ‘Kenechukwu’ offers seven long tracks with various degrees of lyrical depth. If the title track celebrates “the Creator who ‘giveth life’”, ‘Ndi Di Mma’ pays a heartfelt tribute to the good-hearted”.  What emerges after a while is the authentic and honest purpose that propels Moweta’s musical endeavour. It’s a different approach than what we are used to in the West.

For Azuka, ‘Kenechukwu’ serves as a cathartic vehicle, allowing him to connect with a higher power and to celebrate the beauty all around him. Released by Odogwu Entertainment & Palenque Records, the album provides an enlightening, expansive listening experience, a rare quality these days.
