Packed with incredible elegance and timeless charisma, ‘Home’ is the kind of record that doesn’t seek to reinvent the wheel, instead offering a balanced, heartwarming slice of evocative aural matter, certainly relatable and comforting. Behind such a gentle masterpiece, we find the malleable, precise vocals of Vienna-based singer, songwriter and pianist Phil Woloch, blessing us all with his heightened musicianship and magnetic presence.
We do mean that: winning the Joe Zawinul Award at just 14, Woloch got an early start in the music industry, sparking a career that would take him around the world. For now, though, let’s focus on ‘Home’. Marking Phil’s sophomore effort, the track follows up from April’s release ‘Mind at Ease’, a piece that was overall uplifting and bright. The latest single instead embarks on a more reflective and introspective journey, exploring themes of identity and resilience.
From a sonic standpoint, we are into cool retro territories, with a 70s-flavoured pop rock livery being propped up by shiny guitars, driving drum grooves and hints of analogue synthetisers. That said, ‘Home’ still feels modern and relevant, perfectly complementing Woloch’s nuanced artistry. Going by the moniker Phil, the Austrian creative has rallied a team of like-minded musicians around him, and judging by what we have heard so far, it won’t be long till they make it to wider recognition.
