What do you get when you put together a philosopher, a physicist and a musician? You get an inspired, purpose-driven songwriter, a person just like Art Schop. Championing an extremely meaningful lyrical outlook, the New York-based creative returns today with a long and reflective album, ‘The Fifth Hammer’. Drawing inspiration from literature and philosophical figures, Schop builds a fictional artistic universe that’s vivid and relatable, leaving nothing to chance. Every line fits a specific role, all working towards an overarching lyrical ethos.
As Schop explains, ‘The Fifth Hammer’ was inspired by “Daniel Heller-Roazen’s book ‘The Fifth Hammer: Pythagoras and the Disharmony of the World’, which examines the grand philosophical missteps of thinkers like Pythagoras and Kepler”. Even among such enlightened artistry, Schop’s material doesn’t try too hard, eventually landing on relatable and cathartic alt-folk goodness, soothing and gentle pieces with a hidden historical layer.
Art’s vocals are incredibly hypnotising. Sharing a smoky, full-bodied tone, the American musician reaches listeners right in their heart, allowing us all to fully identify with the project’s monumental lyrical premise. Oscillating between melancholia and hopeful reassurances, ‘The Fifth Hammer’ is a unique, wonderful effort.
