The keen reader might remember London-based songstress April Jai from ‘GOOD GIRL’, a heartshaking, striking gem we featured earlier this year, describing the talented creative as “a source of inspiration and independence, further supercharged by her potent, fierce vocals and catchy songwriting”. Well, as one would expect, Jai didn’t stop there, with ‘WHY CHOOSE’ being the latest sultry offering to hit our fictional airwaves.
In truth, simply calling the record ‘sultry’ might be a tad reductive. At its core, it’s a rather honest song, a queer, bisexual anthem embracing deep vulnerability and elegant passion. Written during a collaborative session that included long-time collaborator AMCL, ‘WHY CHOOSE’ sees April opening up about her bisexual preferences, effectively coming out in style with a luscious slice of sonic goodness and hypnotising visuals. Her vocals are always the main attraction, with a soaring, towering tone that instantly captures the listeners’ attention.
Delving deeper into ‘WHY CHOOSE’, Jai explains: “This song feels like my coming out song as it’s the first one where I’ve talked openly about my bisexuality, which took a while to figure out even after being raised by queer parents. This song is an ideal bop for the queer and poly communities.”
