Alex Wellkers Returns with Eclectic New Album ‘Fly Away’

Zurich-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Alex Wellkers just put out his second full-length album, and it contains eleven tunes that have completely blown me away! Titled ‘Fly Away’, it’s the first we’ve heard from Alex since 2021’s EP ‘Droste’, but the wait has most certainly been worth it.

Described by the artist as “an album for people who like dramatic pop and rock songs,” ‘Fly Away’ features classical instruments like violas and violins that have been expertly inserted into contemporary pop-rock arrangements. Along with Wellker’s commanding vocals, there’s a sense of grandeur and sophistication that permeates throughout the record, all leading to a truly cinematic experience.

The gentle ‘You Want Us’ gets the album underway, before a more rocky and gritty ‘We Celebrate’ makes its introduction. Tracks five and six are both sung in French, while the record’s closer ‘Do not fall’ is a hip-hop piece that features French, Swiss-German, and English lyrics. Yup, there’s really not much that Alex Wellkers hasn’t explored in this genre-defying and boundary-pushing album.

While perhaps needing a few listens to completely understand its brilliance, ‘Fly Away’ is an exceptional offering from a highly gifted artist, and I can’t wait to dive into Alex’s previous releases.
