‘Zagani Lullaby’ is a rather interesting piece. At its core, we find a quiet contradiction, one that permeates various layers of the listening experience. Built on tender, acoustic tones, the record is the quintessence of an aural chiaroscuro, a haunting encounter between lullaby-esque melodies and a strikingly melancholic mood. Such contrast is also found in the lyrical plane, with the suffering of the Palestinian people interlaced with a wider reflection on motherhood and the daily horrors of war.
Active between London and Italy, Alessia Piermarini provides evidence of her heightened artistry. ‘Zagani Lullaby’ excels both from a lyrical and sonic standpoint. It’s the complete package, a track that could only emerge from what we would describe as superior musicianship. Accompanying Piermarini on the record, we find collaborators Gianluca De Martini, Emilio Merone, and Aliyah Serena.
We are deeply impressed by the nuance that follows Piermarini’s lyricism. Despite approaching what could be seen by many as an enraging and dark political theme, Alessia is able to instead use it as a thematic pivot for a more tender and observant piece, a lovable song that fiercely contrasts with the gloominess of our times. As we are told: “In ‘Zagani Lullaby’, a mother is singing her child to sleep during wartime in Gaza. Rather than approaching conflict politically, the piece focuses on motherhood, protection and the emotional reality of trying to create tenderness in the middle of fear and destruction.”
