The reader might remember Atlanta-based indie and alternative outfit Last Relapse from a feature we published just under a year ago, praising the project’s previous EP as “collecting five relatable and evocative indie pieces”. One of the interesting facts about that record was also that it marked Last Relapse’s reunion after a long hiatus. Recently, the American group has returned with a brand new single that celebrates their long history. ‘Throw Away the Key’ is exactly that: the first-ever song written by head honcho David Holding back in 2006!
As we explore ‘Throw Away the Key’, we are met with a piece that’s slightly more melodic and uplifting than Last Relapse’s previous material. Guitars are gentler and cleaner, although the band’s rebellious and carefree character is omnipresent. Holding’s vocals are malleable and controlled, here delivered with a certain laid-back freedom, and embracing a keen, evocative charge. The record also ships with a compelling music video.
Delving deeper into the meaningful ethos that propels the single, Holding explains: “‘Throw Away the Key’ was the first song I ever wrote. I never imagined it would wait this long to be heard. Releasing it now lets it belong to the present instead of only being part of the past.” It’s a fascinating perspective. In a way, Last Relapse have come full circle, revisiting their older material with the wisdom and confidence of a seasoned band.
